A good microbicide is primarily an safe compound for humans whose biological activity is specific for pathogens of interest. For this SETUBIO has a large collection of human and animal cells, allowing them to test the cytotoxicity and irritancy of the compounds, to ensure security to the host.

The SETUBIO platform for high-throughput screening of microbicides can test up to 1700 different conditions simultaneously. The proprietary technology also allows the study of strains sensitive to oxygen (anaerobic and microaerophilic strains). The tools developed by SETUBIO therefore establish specific spectra of activity of the active ingredient, on very varied microbial profiles. In this way, it is possible to evaluate both the inhibitory, lethal, stimulatory, or prebiotic properties of a compound, on benefic and or pathogenic strains.

In the environment, bacteria can be under vegetative form or more often as a biofilm that allows them to better withstand environmental stresses, as well as antimicrobials. Knowing how to control biofilms is important both in cleaning and sanitation of surface, but also in the treatment of infections. SETUBIO developed sophisticated techniques allowing to check the inhibition and eradication of biofilm formation of homogeneous (one microbial strain involved) and heterogeneous (multiple strains), on an inert support or cell matrixes such as vaginal, digestive or skin epithelium.

These techniques allow the full study of the in vitro activity of highly active substances pure or in mixture, on many microorganisms. This also help define the clinical trial settings to use.
